Abstracting Specialist
Virginia Mason Medical Center

Job Description:

Abstracting Specialist, Hematology Oncology, Seattle, WA
Part-time, 32 hours per week Monday-Thursday

The Abstracting Specialist extracts accurate and complete information from the cancer patient's chart, analyzes and codes information, and enters it into the Oncology database for use in various studies, reports, and submission to the State.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Abstract, interpret and analyze cancer related information from patient charts
  • Codes abstracted information using chart information and reference material
  • Enter coded information into the Oncology database
  • On an as needed basis, assist in coordinating Tumor Board meetings, respond to requests for cancer related information, train Cancer Registry Clerks and assist in studies or information requests
Required Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree in Health Information Management or a healthcare-related field (e.g., biology) or equivalent
  • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) required within one year of hire
  • CTR+experience
  • Extensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology
  • Working knowledge of all oncology staging and coding schemes
  • Strong computer literacy and keyboarding skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong aptitude for detail
  • Excellent communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years experience in a Tumor Registry or health information management capacity
  • Experience with/involvement in an American College of Surgeons accreditation survey

Part-time Tumor Registrar - Abstractor
Swedish Edmonds

Introduction:
This position is a 20 hour per week position with flexible hours for the right candidate. The primary responsibility of the position is abstracting cancer cases for submission to the State Cancer Registry, as well as the National Cancer Database. Identify, register, complete appropriate follow-up and maintain records of all cancer patients utilizing the tumor registry system. Work with the Medical Staff and other care providers to maintain accreditation of the Cancer Registry by ensuring compliance with the current Cancer Program Standards published by the American College of Surgeons. Analyze registry data and disseminate this data in accordance with professional ethics.
Job Description:
  • Abstract and code data according to registry guidelines utilizing cancer registry software
  • Maintain abstracting timeliness as required by the organization and the Commission on Cancer
  • Meet with Tumor Registry staff as needed
Required Qualifications:
  • Prior experience in Tumor Registry, including abstracting experience
  • Knowledge of malignant diseases and the ability to abstract patient information from patient medical records
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Ability to organize and maintain computer data
  • Ability to understand Swedish/Edmonds medical records filing system and processes involved in creating medical records
  • Ability to prepare narrative reports and graphic presentations of data
  • Ability to speak clearly and courteously when working with physicians and staff
  • Ability to operate a variety of office computer systems and equipment
  • Ability to protect confidential information
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum two years of abstracting experience preferred
  • Ability to work independently
  • Experience with Oncolog preferred
Education Qualifications:
License/Certification: Registered Health Information Technician and/or Certified Tumor Registrar preferred. Must be eligible to take the Tumor Registry Examination, and pass Examination, within one year of date of hire.
Compensation/Benefits:
May be eligible to work remotely after initial training and productivity standards are met.
